Sedentary Full Time
I didn't expect that the hardest thing about a full time job would be sitting for 8 to 10 hours a day. I don't know about you guys but the work has been really hard on my body. Shoulders, neck, back, legs, most of it. Not good if I plan to be doing this for the next thirty years! I'm seeing a great massage therapist for the neck/shoulder/back pain, but only so much of that is covered by extended health care here and it returns quickly. There's a gym at the apartment building I just moved into that I'm anxious to start using, so maybe that will help too. My mind really wants to do other projects outside of work, but the body is disagreeing. It's probably smarter to listen to my body on this one but damn, I'd really like to try some new programming stuff. Frustrating. My 2 nights a week of Volleyball, combined with another night or 2 of practice, and then sometimes a tournament usually beats my body up after sitting all day. I know just how you feel. For a while I had shoulder problems, then I removed the right arm rest on my mouse and the pain went away. Check your chair and desk settings at work. » Posted by: roy at December 9, 2004 10:25 PMI sometimes get pains from sitting at work so much. My solution is to stay off the computer when i'm at home. The trick to keeping your hands in good shape is to use them for something other than the computer. I find that playing Nintendo, along with chinese iron ball direction (http://www.chinashouxing.com/english/direction.htm) helps keep my wrists from seezing up. Also, get a trackball. I find that a trackball is much more ergonomic and is much easier than using a mouse. » Posted by: Kibbee at December 10, 2004 08:42 AMNice to see you got rid of the TypeKey stuff. I couldn't comment at all while that thing was active. And I suspect that noone else could from the post activity on your last few posts » Posted by: Kibbee at December 10, 2004 08:45 AMFor me, getting a MUCH nicer chair and making sure that I use the arm rests is what has really helped me. » Posted by: Jim at December 10, 2004 09:03 AMKibbie: yeah the TypeKey stuff was a side-effect of the MT-Blacklist comment spam prevention being setup by yours truly. :) » Posted by: Ryan at December 10, 2004 09:49 AMI have a pretty nice chair at work, I just haven't been there long enough to adjust it *perfectly* ... it's changing in small increments. » Posted by: Ryan at December 10, 2004 09:52 AM"I removed the right arm rest on my mouse" That doesn't make any sense!! lol. I meant on the chair, but on the right hand side. Oh, and that typekey stuff was pretty ghetto. I had written a comment about "The Machinist" but I lost it when typekey went psycho on me. » Posted by: roy at December 10, 2004 11:01 AMTypeKey is off the main blog and the BulletBlog now. » Posted by: Ryan at December 10, 2004 11:57 AM |
