Google Ownz Me
As you can see on the right, I've signed up for Google's AdSense program. I'll get some pocket change every time people click on the links. The money will go towards paying for the hosting and domain costs for this site, and I don't expect to make much more than that. For an idea of what AdSense is like, see Tim Bray's impressions after a month of using it. Google's also been in the news lately about their new web email service called Gmail, which gives you one free gigabyte of space to store email. Right now, Hotmail gives me 2 megabytes for free. That makes Gmail 500 times larger. Wow. The program is in testing right now but goes live pretty soon. You'll also be able to search your mail with Google's search technology, which is a great feature the others don't have. How can Google afford to give away a gigabyte for free? They'll use advertising targetted to you based on the content of the email you are looking at, which is pretty much what AdSense does to this page. I'll probably snag one of these accounts. But the real bonus is the competition that Hotmail and Yahoo will feel. I expect you'll get more free space at other sites to compete with this. Hmmm. Advertising based on the content of your emails.. I wonder how they'll deal with differentiating actual emails from spam.. It'll be neat to see how Gmail turns out. I'd actually consider paying for something like that.. probably up to $25/year given the service level Google usually has... The other thing that I wonder about if this will make Google more of a target for DDoS attacks... Searching isn't really worthwhile to hit on a large scale since anyone can just use a search engine or newsreader other than Google's. Millions and Millions of people having their email on one service would make it an awfully tempting target... » Posted by: peter at April 2, 2004 01:17 AMNot only spam, Google will have to deal with virus' too. Seems like a lot of work for free customers. They might have a pay service too then ... 10GB anyone? :) I could see people abusing this space. Like emailing mp3s to themselves so they can be stored online. I wonder if they'll have an attachment policy. » Posted by: Ryan at April 2, 2004 08:12 AMI thought that was just an april fools joke... » Posted by: Jim at April 2, 2004 08:41 AMIt was announced before April 1 » Posted by: Ryan at April 2, 2004 09:50 AMgoogle ownz me too. » Posted by: at April 19, 2004 04:01 PM |
