DynDNS

I went to DynDNS.org and set up an account. It's a free service, for up to five addresses, that lets you have a domain name to pointing to a regularly changing IP address. The address http://audioman.dyndns.org should point to my development box's web site. Right now there is nothing on it, just a test page. My Linksys router forwards port 80 to the development box on the internal network so it appears as though there is a web server from the outside.

I use DSL to connect to the Internet and the IP address changes often enough that it's a pain to update the DNS record manually. DynDNS has a list of clients you can use to automate the IP address updating. I chose the DynDNS Updater tool for Windows. It was easy to set up, stays out of the way and best of all it was free.
