iTunes4

iTunes4 was released recently and it includes support for Apple's new online music purchase system, iTunes Music Store. I figured I would sum up the features for people that don't have a Mac (all prices in USD):

  • iTunes Music Store is only available on the Mac, integrated into iTunes4, but a Windows version is coming
  • apparently iTunes Music Store is an Amazon dot com-like web user interface, though I haven't been able to try it (see last point)
  • no subscription fees
  • songs are 99 cents each before tax
  • albums are between $8 and $11, most being $10
  • you pay for one download, after that you have to back it up
  • files are in Apple's AAC audio format
  • you can back up the files to CD or burn them to a regular audio CD, after which you could rip them to MP3 format
  • and finally: iTunes Music Store is not available in Canada yet -- d'oh

For more information, here's a pretty good article in the Wall Street Journal about iTunes Music Store and a review on Slashdot. The comments are more interesting than the review.

So.. in a nutshell... how does this differ from Mp3s, aside from the cost factor?

I mean since they want you to burn it to cd, why not just grab the MP3s directly?
