paradigms
Why do we cling to the desktop paradigm? What is it about windows, widgets, textboxes and icons that float our boats? Honestly, I have no idea. It's almost as if all of those UI critics out there bitching about software usability never said to themselves "why is a window on a desktop? That makes no sense whatsoever." Maybe it's a figurative window onto your data. Whoa, that's deep. Throw the window out .... of well, itself. Let's start with a completely blank slate and see what we come up with. Why a window? Maybe 'cause the monitor is made of glass. And I guess "port-hole" didn't have the same marketing appeal. Some future ideas for a computing env. is to quite literaly have on your "desktop" (table top == visual computer output). One reason why I think that it stays around is that people are just too comforable with it. It is not enought to have something better to switch to, you must give them a reason to switch. And something about "if it isn't broke, don't fix it..." blah. » Posted by: JimboJones at December 13, 2002 08:47 AMNot to worry....just watch Star Trek Nemesis and I'm sure you'll get some ideas :-) » Posted by: roy at December 13, 2002 11:15 AMSeriously, it's all about the 3D-goggles! And the gloves!! hmm... I should go re-watch Johnny Mnemonic again... » Posted by: Peter at December 16, 2002 12:08 AM |
